Women are now better protected, as it was finally acknowledged that rape is possible within marriage (Shaw & Lee, 513). Now everyone has more protection from sexual harassment in the workplace- including not being fired for not consenting to give sexual favors to a boss. Rape shield laws protect a victim's past history from working against them in court, first appearing in 1974 (Postmus, 2013). While statutory rape laws give minors protection (Postmus, 2013). In 1994 the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was important in ensuring the criminal justice system and women's shelters work together on prosecuting domestic violence and sexual assault (Postmus, 2013). Megan's Law works to have a sex offender registry and notification system in place.
