A study conducted recently showed that women who watched more crime drama on TV perceived a greater risk of violence and were less likely to go out alone at night (Custers et al., The Cultivation of Fear of Sexual Violence in Women: Processes and Moderators of the Relationship Between Television and Fear, 2012). Our culture tells stories to create a normal picture of society. However, the reality of rape and domestic violence are vastly misrepresented in the news as extreme, infrequent cases (Custers, 2012). When sexual assault and murder are addressed by the news, they are presented at disproportionate rates.
